The Otamatone Deluxe is NOT a children’s toy (unless the child is one of those unusual ones who is careful with their toys and their friends). If your child has any remnant of “hulk smash”, ninja-sword slash, caveman bash-type of energy left in them, this is NOT an appropriate gift as they will break it very, very quickly. That said, if you’re reasonably mature and careful, this instrument feels well-made enough to last for years of occasional noodling.
The touch-strip is pleasingly responsive and does not require too much pressure to play. Pitch-wise, the note spacing is not linear, but rather wider at the top and tighter at the bottom end of the strip, similar to a stringed instrument. If you have large fingertips, you may have trouble playing in tune near the bottom end of the strip, especially in the mid- and high-range settings.
Sounds ugly to many but I love it. Once you learn to play with expression, it is far more tolerable for haters and enjoyable for music geeks and other lovers.
I’d love to hack it to add CV pitch output — haven’t broken it down but if it’s the same analogue circuitry as the original, I see no reason it couldn’t be done.

I had seen these for a few years and always wanted one, but never took the plunge. I ordered the standard size and in 1 day had a blast with it but in searching out tips and tricks I read that headphones would work with the larger Deluxe model, which I thought was awesome as I thought I could use my headphones and practice and play around with the Otomotone while my husband was watching tv or playing video games.. So I ordered the Deluxe and unfortunately my headphones will not work.. the sound comes through the earpieces but also through the instrument. A little disappointed in that,, but over all I really like this synthesizer. It is fun. Please make a model that can be played with headphones.
I now only have a limited time to practice without driving the husband insane. lol

The big issue with this toy is immense difficulty in learning due to utter lack of tactile feedback, which could have been easily achieved by small notches on the side of the sensor channel at halftones.
While it is fairly trivial to 3d print the missing part, it detracts from the aesthetics of the instrument.
In fact, relaceable/removable attachments with notches of different sizes would help a beginner/intermediate player.
Overall, recommend as a silly toy, but not as a musical instrument.

I got this for my brother who is a musician and also works in the music industry. He absolutely loves it. He had never seen one before yet was able to play it within minutes of having it out of the box. He lives 3 hours away but couldn’t wait to get home so he could plug it into his amp and effects pedal. I have gotten him other instruments in the past and he has loved them all but this is the first one I, ve given him that he was actually excited to play. Great gift idea. I ordered the deluxe model which is larger in size. The classic model would be perfect for kids. And it’s so simple to play anyone could play it without clearing the room. It sounds great too. Fantastic! Fun, affordable, SUPER easy and cute too. Would definitely buy this again.

Their dad is a music teacher, he enjoyed them just as much as the kids! The 10 yr old was playing songs on it within minutes.

Bought this for our adult siblings. They absolutely loved these and were playing with them all night! Definitely takes time to learn to play though.

Very happy. Bought these for Christmas gifts. Looking forward to learning more and possibly buying the deluxe version later.

I bought this as a supplementary tool for my music lessons, and I have to say it was a great purchase. All my students, and pretty much all kids in general love this thing. I use it for ear training exercises and for messing around. It also sounds pretty cool if you run it through a bunch of guitar pedals.

This little instrument is a big hit in our house! Both my daughter and son are obsessed with it. The Otamatone produces fun, silly sounds that mimic laughter, whistles, or a “wah wah wah” effect. At first, it felt more like a noise maker—especially if you haven’t figured out how to control the notes—but once they got the hang of it, my daughter was able to play simple songs like “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.”
It’s quirky, entertaining, and a great introduction to pitch and melody. A unique and fun toy for kids and even adults who love experimenting with sound!

I’m really not entirely sure what to make of this weird little instrument other than you can make a rather surprising range of tones with it. One of those things that are easy to pick up but difficult to master. I’d wager the same folks who can cover songs on a Stylophone would have an absolute heyday with one of these (and they probably do, hence the bigger Deluxe model). It doesn’t get incredibly loud though, even at max volume – which I would imagine is okay if you’re getting one of these for a kid. The design is cute and the range of colors and character variants is pretty impressive.

This is a very fun toy. It is a bright red color, and the size is easy to hold. It fits fine in an adult’s hand, but is very easy for children to hold, as well. It is easy to use right away. It can make a lot of different sounds by playing it in different ways. There is a low-medium-high setting and two volume settings. I would definitely consider it more of a toy than an instrument. It does seem a bit fragile, however ours has been dropped a few times on our hardwood floors and it still works. So it does withstand a few drops. It is a lot of fun for the whole family to play around with. Our family has been able to make many different types of sounds with it by holding it and moving our fingers in different ways. When you squeeze open the mouth it becomes louder. Overall, this is a unique toy that is fun to play with.

Absolutely awesome. Its the cutest thing ever and you can slide your finger on it to change how it sounds. It has settings too if you want to switch sounds. Its a good size too!

Why did you pick this product vs others?:
I am into music – playing and listening. When I saw a band using this, I decided I needed it. It is really neat. It is super easy to use. My 12 year old figured it out quickly. It runs on batteries and doesn’t come with them, so make sure and have some on hand. It’s also adorable. It is a fun little thing to add to anyone’s instrument list.

This guy is fun. It works well and, while I need a lot of practice, it’s fun to figure out songs. It’s kind of difficult. It’s not always easy to find the note and it takes practice. But I like how lightweight and easy to use it is. I’m not about to perform concerts with it but it’s a fun gadget to have on the shelf.

If you’re like me, you (almost) always have music playing, you find yourself singing along without realizing it, and you regularly wish you had an easy instrument to pick up so you could play along.
Hello Otamatone! It’s quirky, it’s ridiculous, it sounds not great when played with any other instrument, but it’s easy and fun! No breathing or blowing necessary, just slide your fingers along the neck to choose your notes, and squeeze the mouth to deliver sounds that are guaranteed to make heads turn.
This instrument is for anyone, even those with a tin ear. Before long, you’ll be Otamatone-ing along with all your favorite artists.
Far exceeding my expectations, I’ve gotten daily use out of this thing at home AND at work. Prepare to amaze anyone in ear shot. It’s Otamatone Time!

I took this to family gathering and people had a lot of fun playing with it and making noises. It was fun for both kids and adults and you can make it have either medium or high volume (with a switch on the back), and you can also change the tone (?) from DEEP, to medium, to really high, and finally, if you squeeze the base you can adjust the sound a bit like the “wa-wa” of a trumpet when you limit some of the air coming out the end.
Anyone can make the sounds -it doesn’t take any skill – and it will definitely entertain (or annoy!) all ages.
Telling it like it is… (verified owner) –
It produces a unique, almost whimsical sound that’s best described as a blend between a theremin and a kazoo. It’s not a high-fidelity instrument, but that’s part of its charm!
Squeezing the cheeks to open the mouth adds a “wah” effect, which is surprisingly expressive once you get the hang of it.
Super fun and easy to play. Comes with a chart to help get familiar with it and play a few notes of a song. Has multiple settings for for unique sounds, with the same song sounding completely different when played on another setting.
The silicone and plastic construction feels durable enough for regular use, though it’s clearly more of a toy than a professional instrument. One minor downside is that it lacks a headphone jack, so you’re limited to playing out loud.
Very interesting instrument!
You’ll need 3 AAA batteries, as it is not rechargeable. Not a bad value from the OG company!

This Otamatone Deluxe Electronic is literally my baby! It’s so much fun to play with, and the sound is quirky and unique. The build feels solid for a toy of this kind, and it’s surprisingly easy to learn basic notes while still allowing for creative play. Whether for music practice, casual fun, or just showing off to friends, it’s a joy to use. I absolutely love it and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys playful, musical gadgets.
